FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions about Miss Old Gold and Black Scholarship Competition)

1.  What is the purpose of the pageant and when was it started?

    The purpose (mission) of the Miss Old Gold and Black Scholarship Competition (MOG&BSC) is to be a source of excellence for women in

    character education, value clarification, economic and social empowerment, role-modeling, mentoring, commitment to service to humanity and to

    provide opportunities that present her in a positive way. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. created the MOG&BSC) created in 1976 in New York with

    Miss Denise Smith, representing Zeta Mu Chapter at Georgia State University as the winner.  The pageant went on hiatus and returned in 1981

    with the competition at the 1982 General Convention in Los Angeles, California.

    The Eta Gamma and Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapters have been competing in the pageant since 1982 and 1986, respectively.  Since then, the

    chapters have won the TCAC title six times and the SWR title three times.

2. What is the role of Miss Old Gold and Black?

    Miss Old Gold and Black’s role is to serve as an ambassador for the program through representation at various selected events, utilize the     

    pageant to promote her personal platform to bring about changes in the community, to serve as role model for young people and to encourage

    them to graduate from high school and college. Miss Old Gold and Black serves a term until her successor is selected which could run for 10-12

    months.

3. When and where is the pageant being held?

    The competition will be held at Prairie View A&M University on January 31, 2025. For information, write missblackandgoldprairieview@gmail.com.

4. Why should students participate in this pageant? How is it different from any others?

    Students should participate in the pageant because it provides them the opportunity to develop the spirit of competition. Additionally, the     

    pageant provides programs for personal and professional development, self esteem and confidence building, enhancement of leadership skills           and developing a sense of responsibility to helping the community. The pageant differs from others because the emphasis is on scholarship and

    Not the superficial aspects of the contestants. The pageant is open to enrolled at the university with a minimum GPA of C+

5. Who is eligible to compete in the Pageant?

    Eligible candidates must be: (1) Natural born females between the ages of 18 and 25 years, (2) currently enrolled as an undergraduate student

    in good standing at the University with a 2.80 GPA and 30 Semester Hours (15 hours must be earned at PVAMU); and (3) will be enrolled at the

    university in the Fall 2025 Semester. Failure to comply with this requirement by the winner will result in forfeiture of prizes and title, etc.

6.  What categories are the candidates judged in?

    The candidates compete in the following categories and the percentage weight of each area: 1. Scholarship (30 Pts), 2. Personal/Private Interview

     (25Pts); 3. Achievement/Projections (10 Pts.)  4. Lifestyle and Physical Fitness (10 Pts); 5. Talent-Creative/Performing Arts (30 Pts); 6. Evening

     Wear (15 Pts) and 7. On-stage Interview Question (15 Pts).  Depending on the number of candidates, preliminary competitions will be

     staged, with the top ten to fifteen candidates competing in the finals.

7. How much does the average person pay to participate?

    The fee for the competition is $150 and is NON-REFUNDABLE. This fee covers pageant administration and production, refreshments, and 

    costuming, Refreshments and other amenities as may be received. Contestants are responsible for all other costs which could run from $300 to

    $1,000 for pageant wardrobe, costuming and talent accompaniment, etc.

8. What are the Contestant’s Obligation? 

    The contestants agree to participate in all activities and special events leading up to the pageant to include rehearsals, programs, etc. The 

    contestant must sell at least (minimum) $700 in Advertisement for the Souvenir Booklet.  Ads designated to support the pageant will not

    be refunded.  If the ad sales is not reached by the Established Deadline, the contestant may be disqualified and withdrawn from the pageant.

9. What titles are awarded?

    The titles awarded are Miss Old Gold and Black Eta Gamma and Miss Old Gold and Black Epsilon Tau Lambda.  The selection is based on the 

    highest points gained and the next highest. In addition, a First Runner up is selected and will move up if either title holder cannot fulfill the

    obligation to the title.  The winners agree to compete in the TCAC District Pageant at a time designated, fees are paid by the local pageant.

   

10.  What prizes does the Candidates Win?

       Two candidates with the title of Miss Old Gold and Black Eta Gamma and Miss Old Gold and Black Epsilon and the chance to compete for the   

       the Texas Council of Alpha Chapters Miss Old Gold and Black. Each title holder will receive ($1,000 in Scholarship payable in two installments).

       She also receives support of other events approved by the pageant in advance. The First Attendant ($500 scholarship). Scholarships are 

       payable in  two equal installments during the pageant academic year, beginning with the fall semester.

11. What other prizes are given?

      Each candidate receives Pageant materials to include Pageant T-shirt, Pageant Gift Box, and other gifts that may be secured by the pageant.

      Preliminary winners in Creative Arts - Talent, Projection, Evening wear and Interview competitions receive special plaques or trophies.
